Linux grep command examples

The Linux grep command: I was running some Linux grep commands the other day when a new Linux user asked what I was doing. After showing him how to use the grep command (and egrep command) his eyes were wide open.

The grep command is used to search for text in one or more files. The name grep is an acronym for "general regular expression parser", but if you just think of it as meaning "search" you'll be just fine.

Alaska Earthquake News: Earlier today I thought we had an earthquake, but when I look at the USGS website I don't see anything above a 2.0 earthquake a little west of Wasilla and Palmer, Alaska. That may have been what I felt, but it's hard to tell, especially because I didn't bother to look at the clock when it happened.
